The name itself says "driver's licence." If you don't have one or it has expired, it means you are not legally permitted to drive a vehicle on the road.
A driver's licence is a permit for driving cars, motorcycles, or other types of vehicles as authorised by the relevant government department. If you drive without a licence or with an expired licence, it is considered illegal, and you will lose the right to be covered by car insurance as well.
What are the penalties for driving without a licence?
The laws specified in the Motor Vehicle Act, B.E. 2522 (1979) and the Land Transport Act, B.E. 2522 (1979), state that:
- "Anyone who drives without a driver's licence shall be subject to imprisonment for up to 1 month, a fine of up to 1,000 baht, or both."
- "Anyone who drives without showing or carrying a driver's licence shall be subject to a fine of up to 1,000 baht."
- "Anyone who drives without a licence due to expiration, suspension, revocation, or confiscation of the licence shall be subject to a fine of up to 2,000 baht."
If you don't want to incur fines or face any penalties, you should have a driver's licence before driving on the road. This ensures compliance with the law and allows for worry-free driving, including other drivers. Sharing the roads with unlicensed drivers would be quite concerning for everyone.
