Driving License Scoring System Implemented

Drive carefully or risk temporary licence suspension! With effect from January 9th 2023, all drivers will have a total of 12 points on their licence. You’d be liable for points deduction for each offence committed, and a 90 day suspension is on the cards should you have no points left.

This is a move that has been put in place to better control the behaviour of our drivers. The deductions are as follows:

1 Point

• Using the phone while driving
• No wearing a helmet
• No wearing seat belt
• Driving too fast over the law limit
• Driving on the sidewalk
• Do not stop driving when people crossing the crosswalk
• Do not give way for the ambulance
• Reckless driving
• Driving without, change, or hide a license plate
• No tax label

2 Points

• Driving in violation of traffic lights
• Driving backwards
• Driving while suspended or revoke your driver’s license

3 Points

• Driving while impaired
• Driving the wrong way as an ordinary driver
• Hit and run

4 Points

• Drunk driving
• Driving while on drugs
• Racing in an unauthorized way
• Driving without regard for the safety of others

Take point off when you didn’t pay for prescription fines

1 overdue payment / 1 point deducted

• Violating traffic signs on the road
• Parking in a no-parking area
• Do not show your driver’s license while driving
• Not driving on the left

What Will Happen if I Have no Points left?

Your driver’s license will be suspended or prohibited from driving all types of vehicles for 90 days. If there is a violation, there will be a penalty of imprisonment of not more than 3 months, a fine of not more than 10,000 baht, or both. 

If your driver’s license is suspended for the third time within 3 years, it may be suspended for more than 90 days, and if the driver’s license is suspended again for the fourth time, it will be revoked.

Points will be on your licence for one year, unless you’ve already received a suspension, in which case you’d only receive a maximum of 8 points back. If you want to get all 12 points back, you can apply for training from the Department of Land Transport.
