If I want to swap licence plates with someone at home or with another car I own, what do you need to do?
If you want to swap licence plates with another car, such as a family member's car, or another one of your cars, or switch to a vanity plate, you can do so under the following conditions:
- Both vehicles must be registered in the same province, but it is not necessary for them to be under the same owner.
- Both vehicles must have been using their current licence plates for at least 1 year.
- Both vehicles must have at least 30 days remaining on their vehicle taxes. If it's less than 30 days, you must pay the annual tax first.
- Both vehicles should not be subject to any legal actions or proceedings regarding registration matters.
By swapping licence plates, there are a total of 3 cases:
1. In the case of changing from the old licence plate to a new one that has never been used before, you will need to reserve or bid for the license plate at www.tabienrod.com before proceeding.
2. In the case of swapping licence plates between two vehicles that have been previously registered, whether you are swapping plates with a family member or another vehicle you own, both vehicles must be registered in the same geographical area. If you wish to swap plates with a vehicle from a different area, you will need to contact the Department of Land Transport to have them consider the case on an individual basis.
3. In the case of swapping licence plates with an auctioned plate, if you have successfully auctioned a licence plate, prepare the following documents for the process:
- Certificate of transfer for the auctioned licence plate number
- Document showing the right to the licence plate (receipt from the Department of Land Transport)
- Copy of the ID card of the owner of the auctioned plate
- Copy of ID card (1 set)
- Copy of the house registration (1 set)
