Renault is making a comeback with the Alpine A290, an electric rally-styled hatchback

Published by on

Building on the Renault 5, the Alpine A290 is an electric rally-styled hatchback that offers greater sportiness and performance.

The Alpine A290 comes with a single motor mounted on the front wheels, providing front-wheel drive (FWD) with an output of 132kW in both the base model and the GT Premium model. The GT Performance and GTS models will have an increased output of 162kW.

For the GTS model, the brand claims it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds when using Launch Control. As for the GT and GT Premium models, they achieve 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds.

The Alpine A290 comes with a 52kWh battery capacity, providing a range of 380 kilometers per charge (WLTP standard). The top-end model also features Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires.

It supports DC fast charging up to 100 kW, with claims of charging from 25% to 80% in 30 minutes, allowing a range of up to 150 kilometers within 15 minutes (WLTP standard). Charging from 10% to 80% using AC takes approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Key features of the Alpine A290 include a bespoke aluminum structure chassis, a rear multi-link suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers, and an anti-roll bar system.

Another notable feature is the brake-by-wire system, which operates with various regenerative braking modes. The car also includes Brembo 4-port calipers for braking.

In terms of vehicle technology, the inspiration comes from both motorsport and video games. The car offers up to 4 driving modes: Save, Normal, Sport, and Personal, allowing drivers to customize their driving experience.

In addition, it draws inspiration from Formula 1 by incorporating a "Push to pass" button on the steering wheel. This feature allows drivers to press the button for a boost of power, which is fully deployed within 10 seconds. After activation, the system requires a cooldown period before it can be used again, typically within 30 seconds.

Not only does it incorporate Motorsport features, but it also integrates coaching and challenge apps to enhance driving skills. It includes a central screen system to provide high-performance driving data.

For the GT Premium and GTS models, they will feature seats, dashboard panels, and door panels adorned with Deep Blue and Eevee Grey accents, crafted from Nappa leather.

The Alpine A290 will feature two screens oriented towards the driver: a 10.1-inch central display and a 10.25-inch steering wheel-mounted rear screen. It also includes a total of 9 speakers.

It is expected that the Alpine A290 will begin deliveries in the European market within this year, with a price higher than the Renault 5.
