Why is the Tollway More Expensive than Other Expressways?
The Tollway, commonly known as the Don Mueang Elevated Expressway, is a crucial route for residents in northern Bangkok areas, such as Rangsit and nearby districts.
Traveling into downtown Bangkok via the Tollway saves a significant amount of time, yet it charges higher toll fees compared to other expressways. Let’s explore the reasons behind the higher rates of this particular expressway.
Reasons Behind the Higher Toll Fees of the Don Mueang Tollway
- Privately Operated Under Special Concession Terms
The Don Mueang Tollway is operated by Don Muang Tollway Public Company Limited under a special concession agreement with the state. The terms of this agreement set toll rates under specific conditions, including periodic rate adjustments as compensation for revenue loss during the closure of Don Mueang Airport in late 2006. These rates are adjusted every five years until the end of the concession in 2034, with the most recent rate adjustment occurring on December 22, 2019.
- Short Distance but High Toll Fees
Despite being only 28 kilometers long, the toll fee for 4-wheeled vehicles on the Don Mueang Tollway is 115 Baht, which is significantly higher than on other, longer expressway routes. This includes routes that connect Bangkok with nearby provinces, such as the Bangna-Chonburi Expressway or the Motorway Route 7 from Lat Krabang to Pattaya.
Comparison of Toll Rates for Each Expressway
Expressway Name | Route | Distance | Toll Fee for 4-Wheeled Vehicles |
Udon Ratthaya Expressway | Bang Pa-in - Pak Kret | 32 km | 55 Baht |
Burapha Withi Expressway | Bang Na - Chonburi | 55 km | 80 Baht |
Motorway Route 7 | Lat Krabang - Pattaya | 125 km | 105 Baht |
Don Mueang Tollway | - | 28 km | 115 Baht |
Future Toll Rate Adjustments for the Don Mueang Tollway
Under the concession terms, the Don Mueang Tollway is scheduled for its next toll adjustment on December 22, 2024, with an increase of 5-10 Baht from current rates. This will bring the new toll fees to between 40-170 Baht, depending on the vehicle type and travel distance.
Although the Don Mueang Tollway is relatively short in distance, the special concession terms allow for toll adjustments every five years, keeping rates relatively high. For those looking for convenience and reduced travel time to central Bangkok, the Don Mueang Tollway remains an effective option.
