Many people may have noticed water dripping under their car after parking for a while, especially during the rainy season or when the weather is very hot.
This phenomenon raises the question, “What causes water to drip under the car?” and “Is it a sign of car problems?” Motorist will explain the causes and how to observe water dripping under the car to help you understand and take better care of your car.
Causes of water dripping under the car
Water dripping under the car can be caused by many reasons. Most of them can be divided into 2 types: normal causes and abnormal causes.
Normal Causes (No Need to Worry)
- Water from the Air Conditioning System (Car Air Conditioner)
When the air conditioner in the car is turned on, the air conditioning system will draw out moisture from the air, causing condensation on the evaporator coil. The resulting water will then be released through the drain pipe under the car. This is normal and not something to worry about.
- Water from driving in the rain or on wet ground
If you drive in an area with standing water, water may stick to the underside of the car and drip down when the car is stopped.
Abnormal Causes (Should be checked immediately)
- Oil or other liquid leaks
The water dripping may not be ordinary water, but important liquids such as engine oil, brake fluid, or coolant. If the liquid that drips has an unusual color or smell, such as green, red, or a pungent smell, it should be checked immediately.
- Cooling System Problems
The coolant in the cooling system may be leaking from the radiator or connecting pipes. If the water that drips is hot or smells of coolant, it may be a sign that there is a problem with the cooling system.
How to check for water dripping under the car
Observe the location
- Where is the water dripping in the car, such as under the engine compartment, under the radiator, or under the air conditioning system.
Observe the characteristics of the water
- Clear water and no smell: It may be water from the air conditioner
- Green or red water with a specific smell: It may be coolant
- Black or brown liquid: It may be engine oil
- Check the surface after parking
- Use tissue paper or a white cloth under the car to check the color and characteristics of the liquid
Water dripping under the car can be caused by normal causes, such as water from the air conditioning system, or it may be a sign of a problem, such as a leak in the fluid in various systems. It is important to observe the characteristics and location of the water dripping. If you find any abnormalities, you should check and fix them immediately for the safety of your car and yourself.
