Many people may wonder whether driving without shoes, or what is known as “driving barefoot”, is illegal or not?
Because this behavior is common for many people, especially when in a rush or when wearing shoes while driving.
Is it really illegal to drive barefoot?
In Thailand, traffic laws do not clearly state that driving barefoot is illegal. This means that driving without shoes is not considered a direct violation of the law. However, the driver must be able to control the car safely at all times. If an accident occurs or there is an action that shows negligence, such as not being able to brake in time or being unable to control the car, it may be considered a crime of reckless driving, which has a clear penalty specified by law.
Precautions for driving barefoot
Although driving barefoot is not illegal, there are some precautions to be taken:
Slippery pedals - The brake or accelerator pedal may slip when stepped on with bare feet, especially when feet are wet or sweaty.
Driving control - Using bare feet may reduce the ability to control the pressure on the brake or accelerator pedal.
Personal safety - In the event of an accident or emergency, not having shoes may increase the risk of injury.
Driving barefoot in Thailand is not illegal, but drivers should be aware of safety and wear appropriate shoes, such as flat heels or shoes that do not cause feet to slip. To increase confidence and reduce the risk of accidents because in the end, the safety of yourself and other road users is the most important thing!
