Putting on your hazards is a good way of warning other motorists of potential danger on the road, but using them incorrectly could result in a fine.

We've seen hazard lights used for a number of reasons, such as warning people behind you of a potential hazard, stopping in a loading zone, or even saying 'thank you' to people who let you in. But there is a little-known road rule in Thailand that can land you a few hundred baht poorer if caught with them in certain scenarios.

Laws on the Use of Hazard Lights

According to the Land Traffic Act of 1979, emergency lights should only be used in cases where the car is parked in a condition that may cause danger, such as a broken down car or parked in a dangerous area. If emergency lights are used in other ways, such as while driving in heavy rain or leaving them on while driving, it is considered misuse and may be fined by the traffic police.

Fines

Misuse of hazard lights may be subject to fines according to traffic laws, with a maximum fine of 500 baht, depending on the officer's discretion.

Therefore, turning on hazard lights in inappropriate situations is not only illegal, but also poses a risk to the safety of other road users. Hazard lights should be used correctly for the safety of everyone on the road!
