Can You Keep Aerosols in the Car?

Aerosol cans are convenient for many purposes, from deodorants and cleaning sprays to insect repellents and air fresheners.

However, storing them in a car for extended periods can be risky. Here’s why you should think twice before leaving aerosol products in your vehicle.

1. Why Aerosols Can Be Dangerous in a Car

Aerosols are pressurized containers filled with liquid or gas. When exposed to high temperatures, the pressure inside the can increases, which may lead to

• Explosion Risk: If temperatures rise too much, the can may burst, potentially causing damage to your car.
• Leaks and Malfunctions: Even if the can doesn’t explode, extreme heat can cause it to leak, ruining the product and making a mess.

2. How Temperature Affects Aerosols

Car interiors can get extremely hot, especially in summer. A parked car in direct sunlight can reach over 60°C, which is dangerous for aerosol cans. Most aerosol products have warnings advising against storage above 49°C.

In cold weather, aerosols may also become less effective. Freezing temperatures can affect the pressure and consistency of the product, making it harder to spray properly.

3. Which Aerosols Are Most at Risk?

Some aerosol products are more sensitive to temperature changes than others, including

• Spray Paints - High heat can cause the paint to expand and leak.
• Hairsprays and Deodorants - The propellant inside can become unstable in extreme temperatures.
• Insect Sprays - High temperatures can affect the chemicals, making them less effective.

While it may be convenient to keep aerosol cans in your car, it’s generally not safe due to the risk of high temperatures causing explosions or leaks. If you must transport an aerosol, try to take it with you instead of leaving it behind in extreme conditions. Staying mindful of these risks can help you avoid potential accidents and keep your car safe.
