In many countries, car horns are mainly used as warning signals or expressions of frustration on the road.

1. Honking to Greet

Sometimes, drivers honk briefly to greet friends passing by or walking along the roadside, especially in rural areas where people know each other well. This creates a friendly atmosphere on the road.

2. Honking to Say Thank You

In some situations, such as when another driver lets them pass or gives way at an intersection, Thai drivers may honk lightly as a way of showing gratitude. This differs from some countries where waving a hand is more common.

3. Honking to Call Someone

Beyond traffic use, car horns sometimes function as doorbells or signals to call people. For example, taxis or songthaews (shared pickup trucks) may honk to let passengers know they are available. Occasionally, drivers honk to alert friends or homeowners of their arrival.

Some Thai people believe that certain dangerous curves or accident-prone areas may be haunted. Honking before passing through is thought to be a way of “asking for permission” or showing respect to unseen spirits.

While honking to express irritation is common worldwide, Thai drivers often opt for a short, polite honk instead of a prolonged, aggressive one. Sometimes, it’s just a gentle reminder, like honking softly to alert the car in front that the traffic light has been green for a while.
