Motorhome Registration: Requirements and Process

Registering a motorhome or a vehicle modified for residential use is a legal process that ensures the vehicle can be used properly and safely on the road.

In this article, Motorist will guide you through the steps, methods, and documents needed for registering a motorhome in Thailand.

Steps to Register a Motorhome

1. If the vehicle modification is complete and you wish to register it legally, you must submit two important documents to the authorities:

• The receipt (including VAT), which should be separated into two sets: one for the modification and one for the painting.
• A certification letter from an engineer for each part of the vehicle that was modified from the standard factory design.

2. Take the vehicle for inspection at the provincial transport office to register the new vehicle. The officials will carefully inspect the vehicle in accordance with the law and provide advice on the necessary documents to submit.

• Bring the vehicle model for consultation about the inspection process at the transport office. This will prepare the vehicle for the certification letter, where the engineer will inspect and issue the certificate.

3. Take the vehicle to the provincial excise office to pay excise tax, which will take about three weeks. The central office must evaluate the tax rate, and you’ll need to wait to see whether you will be charged 35% or 55% of the modification cost on the receipt.

• For this step, submit your motorhome design plan to the excise office for the tax evaluation. You’ll receive a document number from the officer to assist in the process.

4. Submit the excise tax payment receipt and other certification documents (as advised in step 3) to the transport office. This will take about one week, and you’ll receive the inspection certificate for your new registration. Once everything is in order, the process is complete.

Note: If the vehicle is a motorhome or modified from a pickup truck, it must first be registered as a “special purpose truck” before it can be classified as a motorhome.
