Do EVs Need Car Insurance & Compulsory Insurance in Thailand? Find Out Here!

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity in Thailand! They’re more cost-effective and eco-friendly, but before you buy one, make sure you understand car insurance for EVs. It’s not the same as regular car insurance. And do EVs need compulsory insurance (Por Ror Bor)? Let’s break it all down!

EV Insurance vs. Regular Car Insurance

EV insurance is designed specifically for electric cars, covering accidents, theft, and most importantly, the battery, which regular car insurance may not cover. It also includes additional services like emergency charging and EV-specialized repairs.

What Does EV Insurance Cover?
  • Medical expenses for drivers, passengers, and third parties
  • Accidents (both with and without third-party involvement – for First-Class Insurance)
  • Natural disasters, fire, and theft
  • Repairs at EV-certified service centers
  • Battery and home charging unit (including accidents while charging!)

* EV insurance requires you to list up to 5 named drivers, but only 2 can be on the official policy document

Why Is EV Insurance More Expensive?
  • Battery Coverage – Battery replacement can cost half the price of the car!
  • Limited EV Market in Thailand – There’s not enough claims data, so insurers set high premiums.
  • Few Specialized Repair Centers – EVs need expert technicians, and parts often need to be imported.
Do EVs Need Compulsory Insurance (Por Ror Bor)?

Yes! All vehicles on Thai roads must have Por Ror Bor, which covers medical expenses for injuries from accidents – whether you’re the driver, passenger, or pedestrian.

  • Basic medical coverage: Up to 30,000 THB
  • Death compensation: Up to 500,000 THB
  • Daily compensation (for hospitalization): 200 THB/day (max 20 days)
Summary: What EV Owners Must Know
  • Get EV insurance for battery and specialized repairs
  • EV insurance costs more due to expensive parts & limited service centers
  • Por Ror Bor is mandatory – without it, you can’t renew your road tax!

If you’re considering an EV, make sure you understand insurance options first – it’ll save you from unexpected expenses down the road!
