Car Not Driven Often? Here’s How to Maintain It and Avoid Long-Term Damage

However, cars that are rarely used still require proper care. If left unattended for too long, issues such as a dead battery, deteriorated tires, or degraded engine oil may occur. Here’s how to take care of a car that is not frequently used!

1. Start the Engine Regularly

Even if you don’t drive your car daily, you should start the engine once or twice a week and let it run for about 10–15 minutes. This helps recharge the battery and keeps the car’s systems functioning properly.

2. Drive Occasionally to Maintain the Engine

If possible, take the car for a short drive of around 10–20 minutes every week. This helps circulate the engine oil, keeps the mechanical parts in good condition, and prevents issues such as flat spots on tires.

3. Check Tire Pressure Regularly

When a car is parked for long periods, the tires may lose air pressure or become deformed. Check and inflate the tires to the recommended level at least once a month to prevent damage.

4. Maintain the Battery

A car that remains unused for too long may have a drained or deteriorating battery. If you plan to leave the car parked for an extended time, consider disconnecting the battery terminals or using a battery maintainer to prevent it from going flat.

5. Change the Engine Oil as Scheduled

Even if the car isn’t driven frequently, engine oil can still degrade over time. It’s important to change the oil according to the recommended schedule, even if you haven’t reached the mileage limit.

6. Keep the Car Clean

Dust, dirt, and moisture can damage your car’s exterior and interior. Regularly wash the car and consider using a car cover if parking outdoors for extended periods.

7. Keep the Fuel Tank Partially Filled

Always keep some fuel in the tank, as an almost empty tank can accumulate moisture, leading to rust and potential issues with the fuel system.

Even if a car is rarely used, regular maintenance is still necessary to keep it in good condition and prevent long-term problems. By following these simple steps, you can extend your car’s lifespan and avoid costly repairs in the future!
