1. Press the Brake Pedal Before Starting the Engine

Before starting your car, always check if the gear is in P (Park) to ensure the car is completely stationary. If the gear is left in D (Drive), N (Neutral), or R (Reverse) before turning off the engine, restarting the car can cause it to move unexpectedly, which can be dangerous. When starting the engine, place your right foot on the brake pedal and press it down, then insert the key and turn it clockwise to start the car.

2. Use Only One Foot for Driving

When driving an automatic car, you should use only your right foot to control both the accelerator and the brake. The brake pedal is on the left, while the accelerator is on the right. This helps ensure better control, prevents confusion, and reduces the risk of accidental braking or acceleration.

3. Use “P” When Parking for a Long Time

If you need to park your car for an extended period—such as at home, in a parking lot, or even when making a quick stop—always shift to P (Park). This prevents the car from rolling unexpectedly. Additionally, it’s a good idea to turn off the engine to prevent theft, as leaving the car running makes it easier for someone to drive away with it.

4. Use “N” at Traffic Lights

Many beginners wonder which gear to use when stopping at a red light. If it’s a short stop, you can shift to N (Neutral) while keeping your foot on the brake pedal. However, be cautious when stopping on a slope or uneven surface, as the car may roll forward or backward.

5. Avoid Coasting in “N” to Save Fuel

Some people believe that shifting to N (Neutral) and letting the car roll before stopping at a traffic light helps save fuel. However, this is a bad practice that can damage the transmission over time. In reality, it doesn’t save fuel and can lead to costly repairs in the long run.
