Have you ever parked your car nicely, only to find bird droppings on the paint when you check later? While many might view it as a minor inconvenience, did you know that bird droppings can actually be more damaging to your car's paint than you might think?

The issue of bird droppings on vehicles may seem trivial, but it can cause significant frustration and damage. A recent survey by Halfords, a renowned automotive equipment retailer in the UK, has revealed intriguing information about bird droppings on cars of different colors and shown which car colors are most at risk.

According to the Halfords survey, which included data from 1,140 car owners, red cars are the most likely to encounter bird droppings, with a risk percentage of 18%. Blue cars follow as the second most at risk, with a 14% chance. The color least likely to attract bird droppings is green, with only a 1% occurrence.

Although there is no clear theory explaining why birds prefer to defecate on cars of certain colors, some car owners have shared interesting observations. One Lexus owner noted that birds often target cars that have just been washed because they can see their reflections on the freshly cleaned paint. A Ford owner added that darker colors like black, red, and blue have more pronounced reflections, making them more likely targets for birds.

Prevention and Care

However, another respondent pointed out that the color of the car might not be the crucial factor in determining whether a car will be targeted by bird droppings. Instead, where the car is parked is equally important, especially if it's under a tree or in an area where birds are present.

The survey also covered the topic of cleaning bird droppings from car paint. It found that only 17% of car owners clean off the droppings immediately when they see them, while 20% do so within 2-3 days. Surprisingly, 55% of respondents leave the droppings until the next car wash.

Impact of Bird Droppings on Car Paint

Autoglym, a leading car polish brand, explains that the damage caused by bird droppings is not due to the acidity or alkalinity of the droppings but rather because they cause the paint's lacquer to soften and expand, leading to stubborn, hard-to-clean spots.

If you want to avoid the problem of bird droppings on your car, choosing the right color might help, but prompt care and cleaning are equally important to prevent long-term damage to your car's paint. So, no matter what color car you choose, be prepared to deal with bird droppings effectively and clean them up quickly to keep your car looking its best for as long as possible.
